Essential Aspects of Hen House Plans

Designing a functional and comfortable hen house is crucial for the well-being of your hens. Here are some key aspects to consider:

Dimensions and Space

The size of your hen house depends on the number of hens you plan to keep. A general rule is to provide 4 square feet of floor space per hen. The height should be at least 6 feet to allow for proper ventilation and headroom.

Ventilation

Adequate ventilation is essential for preventing respiratory problems in hens. Ensure proper air circulation by installing windows, vents, or fans. Avoid overcrowding the hen house to prevent ammonia buildup.

Nesting Boxes

Provide one nesting box per 3-4 hens. Nest boxes should be dark, secluded, and well-ventilated. They should be at least 12 inches square and lined with clean straw or shavings.

Roosting Perches

Hens prefer to roost elevated at night. Provide perches at least 18 inches off the ground, spaced far enough apart to prevent overcrowding. Perches should be made of smooth, round material to prevent foot injuries.
